Original sculptures and unusual ornaments for gardens and plants made in high-fired Craft Crank stoneware clay with matt glazes. Sources of inspiration include medieval sculpture, Indian architecture, gardens and games.
My work is large-scale ornamental objects for gardens, such as birdbaths, planters, lanterns and sculptures. I have looked to art forms beyond traditional ceramics as inspirations for my designs, including Indian architecture, Peruvian textiles, Victorian ironwork, ancient and medieval sculpture and plant forms.
Recently I have been developing my figurative sculptures as pieces in their own right and drawing on my range of ceramic techniques and processes to create them. Sculptures include a complete chess set where pieces can be purchased individually, and busts representing the Four Elements or Four Seasons.
My work is made from Craft Crank stoneware or from semi-porcelain. Techniques include free hand modelling, slab building and some coiling. I decorate my work with impressed patterns or applied sprigs using my own hand-carved plaster blocks and sprig-moulds.
All the work is raw glazed and fired to 1260oC in oxidation.
STUDIO: My studio is in the old kitchen of a Victorian house with two kilns in a conservatory at the back.
Narrow side passage to garden, one low step into studio.
